1st time running at a drag strip. Leaving in about 2 hours. 2011 Mustang GT manual on street tires. Anyone got some useful advice for me? Traction control on or off? I skip the burnout box with street tires right? Feeling nervous...

EDIT: Thanks for the tips everyone. Driving home at the end of the night is the number 1 goal closely followed by having fun. Less nervous and more excited now. WOOT. Hopefully I can snap some pictures of sweet ass cars for all you kind people.

TC off - practice feathering the clutch on launch somewhere safe a few times and find the limit of adhesion for your tires. Remember if the rear breaks loose don't peddle totally off the gas, modulate it. Take all that shit out of the trunk.

It's going fast in a straight-line otherwise. Remember to brake at the end.

TC off, take it easy out of the hole until you see what your grip is like. Usually it's pretty sucky on street tires. It's the launch that counts the most, really. Missing a shift is no big deal. It's controlling the launch that matters.

It's okay to warm up the street tires. But it's rude to drag the front wheels through the water box, you drag water up to the starting line with you. Go around the box, then back into it. Some street tires react better than others to warming up. Only warm them for a few seconds. Don't overdo it.

edit - I almost forgot the most important things - 1) don't be a jackass (I know you won't) and 2) have fun!

Oh yeah, don't forget to brake at the end! Good tip! haha. (some tracks have multiple turnoffs. You don't have to make the first one!)

Traction control OFF.

Go around the box. Give the tires a little spin just to clean them off. Run as little gas a as possible and empty as much stuff out of the car as you can. Street tires don't need to be run down low like a drag radial or racing slick. Find the pressure that gives a wide and even contact patch.

Slip the clutch. Shoot for 1800 or so RPM on a street tire for the launch to start with and go from there. Have fun.

Don't try to be the hero. Its not worth blowing your motor / gears / clutch / the wall...

Do not use the water box unless you are 100% sure you can burn all the water off before you line up.

TCS on/off depends on your confidence in the car. With the good ole Ford TCS you will lose ignition if your tires spin and probably a second on the 1/4.

Pulling into pre-staging / staging common courtesy is if you are the first person to pull into the staging lanes you trigger pre-staging (first set of yellow lights) and wait for the other driver to pull in and get staged before you stage (second set of lights).

And again, don't try to be a hero. Its more commendable to say "first time at the track I ran 15's but made it to the end in 1 piece" than to say "I reved to 7k dropped the clutch, spun the shit out of the tires, spun and hit the wall. But I would have run a 12..."

Don't feel pressured to get out there and rip off amazing times from the get-go.

Work your way up leaving the line. Don't just go out there and dump the clutch on your first run. Walk the clutch out, and gradually increase your launch rpm's until you've got a feel for the sweet spot between bogging and wheel hop/spinning.

Also, completely forget about reaction time. You should be focusing on getting out of the hole smoothly and efficiently. Only once you've done that, should you start worrying about your timing leaving the tree.

As for your car prep, run with a lighter fuel load- 1/4 tank, skip the burnout box, turn the T/C off, maybe lower your rear tire pressure a bit. Take the spare out if you want, I guess.

Most importantly, be safe and have fun!!

Do. Not. Turn.

At least, not until you are supposed to.

No you leave on the third yellow. It takes a few passes and watching others hit the light but if you leave on the third yellow by the time your feet start doing something the light is green.

If you leave on green you will be "sleeping" at the light and loose.

You're going to have a surge of adrenaline when you roll up to the tree, thats the point where you have to remember not to screw up.

Avoid the waterbox (don't want to drag water on the track). Lower your rear tires down a little ( I ran 18psi on my nitto 555's and I was dead hooking with 436rwhp). If you really want to get crafty, air up the front tires to the max to decrease rolling resistance.

Of course make sure all "controls" are turned off

Since you have a manual, and street tires, don't just dump the clutch, feed it out slow at first and when the car gets rolling, then you can drop it.

Let us know how you do! 5.0's are usually good for high 12's with really good drivers, if you hit low 13's on your first trip ever you are doing good.
